Troy Stecher was born on April 7, 1994 in Richmond, British Columbia. A product of the Penticton Vees of the BCHL, the defender was not drafted by an NHL club and would go on to spend three years at the University of North Dakota. Following his third collegiate season Stecher signed an entry-level deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

Stecher would begin the 2016-17 season at the American Hockey League level with the Canuck’s affiliate, the Utica Comets. After just four games with the Comets however he was recalled and joined the Canucks for the remainder of the NHL season. Stecher would go on to appear in 71 games for Vancouver during his first professional campaign, scoring three times and adding 21 assists.
