Yohann Auvitu was born on July 27, 1989 in Ivry-sur-Seine, France. He made his professional debut for JYP in Finland's top division and helped the club to the championship in 2012. Prior to the 2014-15 season, Auvitu signed with HIFK. In his second season with the club he was awarded the Pekka Rautakallio trophy as the best defenceman in the Finnish Liiga.

Auvitu signed as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils on May 27, 2016. He made his NHL debut on October 13, 2016 and would go on to appear in 25 games during his first season in North America. He also suited up in 29 games at the AHL level, scoring five times and adding eight assists.

After just one season in New Jersey, Auvitu's time with the Devils would come to an end. On July 10, 2017, he signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers.
