Mikhail Sergachev was born on June 25, 1998 in Nizhnekamsk, Russia. A standout in his homeland he played his major junior hockey with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. In his first year with the club Sergachev recorded 57 points in 67 games and was awarded the Max Kaminsky trophy as the league’s most outstanding defenceman. The following season he helped lead Windsor to the third Memorial Cup title in franchise history.

Sergachev was selected in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens and would crack the club’s opening night roster to start the 2016-17 season. He would appear in four games for Montreal before being returned to Windsor for the remainder of the season.

On June 15, 2017, Sergachev’s time in the Canadiens’ organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with a second round draft pick in exchange for Jonathan Drouin. He would go on to appear in 79 games for the Lightning during the 2017-18 season, recording nine goals and adding 31 assists. His 40 points were the second highest total of any first-year defender.
