Charlie McAvoy was born on December 21, 1997 in Long Beach, New York. A star defenceman in the USHL, he then attended Boston University and was selected in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

Following his second collegiate season, McAvoy signed with the Bruins and joined the club's AHL affiliate in Providence for the final four games of the regular season. He was then promoted to the Bruins and joined the club for the post-season. He made his NHL debut on April 12, 2017 in Boston's first round match against the Ottawa Senators. He would go on to appear in all six of the Bruins post-season contests, providing reliable play on the back end and contributing three assists.
