Matt Lorito was born on July 3, 1990 in Oakville, Ontario. A product of the Villanova Knights of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Lorito was not drafted by an NHL club and instead spent four seasons at Brown University. In his second collegiate season Lorito led his team in scoring with 37 points in 36 games and to advance to the ECAC Championship for the first time since 1993.

Following his fourth year at Brown, Lorito signed as a free agent with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League. He would spend the remainder of the 2014-15 season as well as the following year with the Devils before signing as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings on July 1, 2016.

Lorito would spend the majority of the 2016-17 season with the Red Wingsí AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 61 games, he scored 22 times and added 34 assists for a team high 56 points. His strong play was rewarded when at seasonís end he got his first taste of NHL action. He made his debut for the Red Wings on April 8, 2017 and would appear in a pair of games before returning to Grand Rapids for the AHL playoffs. On July 2, 2018, Lorito's time in the Red Wings organization would come to an end. He signed a two-year deal with the New York Islanders.
