Ryan Johnston was born on February 14, 1992, in Sudbury, Ontario. A product of the Central Canada Hockey League, he would go on to attend Colgate University.

Johnston would make his professional debut for the Canadiens' American Hockey League affiliate, the St. John's IceCaps during the 2015-16 season. In 37 games for the club, the defenceman recorded 12 assists. Johnston would also get his first taste of NHL action during the 2015-16 season. He made his NHL debut for the Canadiens on April 5, 2015, and would go on to appear in three games for the club as the season came to a close.

The 2016-17 season would be spent primarily in the American Hockey League with the IceCaps, though Johnston would see action in seven games for Montreal. In the summer of 2017 Johnston signed a deal to join Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League.
