Erik Burgdoerfer was born on December 11, 1988 in East Setauket, New York. The defenceman played four collegiate seasons for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and began his professional career with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

After four seasons with Bakersfield, Burgdoerfer signed with the Oklahoma City Barons and later the Hershey Bears. After two seasons in Hershey he signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Sabres and joined the club's AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans for the 2016-17 seasons. Burgdoerfer got his first taste of NHL action on December 5, 2016 in a 3-2 loss against the Washington Capitals. He would go on to appear in one more game for the Sabres before being returned to Rochester.

As a free agent in the summer of 2017, Burgdoerfer signed with the Ottawa Senators.
