STANLEY CUP VISITS GRAND PRIZE WINNER:

He couldn't eat. He couldn't sleep. And like many of his classmates, he couldn't wait for this day to arrive. On Monday, April 7, 2008 a dream came true for a grade five student from Sawmill Valley Public School in Mississauga, Ontario.

As the grand prize winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame's Writing Challenge, Jackson Topo and his thrilled classmates welcomed the Stanley Cup to their elementary school.

Earlier in the school year, grade 5 and 6 students in selected school boards across Ontario had the opportunity to win a visit from the Stanley Cup. After receiving an overwhelming number of responses, the Hockey Hall of Fame Education Committee announced the four finalists on February 15, 2008. Two weeks later, the four finalists, accompanied by their classmates, visited the Hockey Hall of Fame to read their submissions.

Topo's submission entitled "Gold Medal Leadership" earned his school a visit by the Stanley Cup. A school-wide assembly was held to honour the Stanley Cup's visit which began with the presentation of Topo's essay and was followed by the unveiling the Stanley Cup itself.

The assembly also included a special "Tales of the Cup" presentation by 'Keeper of the Cup' Phil Pritchard, and a question-and-answer period. This is the second year the Hockey Hall of Fame has issued its Writing Challenge in an attempt to foster writing in the classroom.

1. Present the following three questions to your students.

Students will have the option to write a 250-300 word response in the form of a short essay to one of the three questions listed below:

  1. In 2002 at the Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, Utah, Team Canada brought home gold medals in both men's and women's hockey. Imagine that you have been chosen as captain of Team Canada's men's or women's hockey team for the 2010 Olympic Games. As captain, how would you demonstrate examples of leadership that would help your teammates acquire the gold medal?

  2. During the off season, NHL coaches and trainers are constantly reminding the players to continue with a healthy lifestyle. If you were a professional hockey coach, clearly discuss what you would specifically do to help your players maintain an active physical routine, healthy eating habits, and positive personal choices.

  3. There are many valuable life skills embedded within the game of ice hockey. To be a positive influence in your community, explain in detail the lessons or strategies you can use from the game of hockey to help you deal with problems, respectfully and responsibly, that may arise in your life at school, with your friends, on the internet, or at home.
