The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is the World Governing Body of ice
hockey and is responsible for the development, promotion and organization of hockey
between all ice hockey countries of the world, including Canada and the United States.
The International Ice Hockey Federation Museum is the home for exhibits from
approximately 50 IIHF member countries worldwide. Since many are convinced
the first organized game of hockey was played in 1886 on the ice of Kingston
harbour (an event reenacted each winter since 1969 and sponsored by the
IIHF Museum) Kingston is a natural location for a hockey museum facility.
Today, hockey has grown to encompass amateur, professional, youth, women,
and old-time competitors and the IIHF Museum continues to change and expand
to reflect this growth. The Museum's origins go back to 1943, when Kingston
was originally selected as the site for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The current
building, created in 1961, acknowledged as a museum in 1972, and enlarged in
1978 provides unique impressions. There are memories of the old and new, from
short, field hockey type sticks and clamp skates, to the latest boots and blades,
to the colourful sweaters and logos of Olympic and World teams and athletes.
