In Memoriam

Kenny Reardon 1921-2008

Kenny Reardon
1921-2008

It is with deep regret that the Hockey Hall of Fame learned of the passing of Honoured Member Kenny Reardon. On March 15, 2008, the 86-year-old former Canadien succumbed to his lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. A fearless defenceman, Reardon competed in 341 NHL games over seven seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, capturing a Stanley Cup in 1945.

Reardon's career started as a New York Rangers prospect, but when the team left him exposed to make room for another player, the Montreal Canadiens signed him to a contract. He played two seasons with Montreal, establishing a reputation as a rough-and-tumble performer and quickly became a fan favourite. Reardon enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and spent several years playing for army teams in the Ottawa area, winning the Allan Cup with the Commandos in 1943 before being shipping overseas. He returned to Canada in 1945 and worked on his timing with the Montreal Royals for two games before rejoining the Canadiens. Reardon was a large part of the team's Stanley Cup championship that season and was named to the NHL's Second All-Star Team for his all-out efforts. He was selected to the Second Team on two other occasions and the First Team twice in his remaining four years in the league. Reardon retired before he turned 30, partially because of the many injuries he'd sustained due to his style of play.

After his retirement, Reardon began a successful career as an executive in hockey, primarily with the Montreal Canadiens organization. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966.

John Ashley 1930-2008

John Ashley
1930-2008

The Hockey Hall of Fame and its members are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Honoured Member John Ashley. An eighteen year veteran in the NHL, Ashley was assigned every game seven of the playoffs from 1964 to 1972, a true testament to his reputation among both the NHL and the players.

John Ashley's career began refereeing minor hockey games in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario. He quickly moved his way up through the OHA chain, and after just two seasons was signed to an NHL contract in 1959. He worked mostly in the AHL and USHL that first year, though he did earn a few spot assignments as both a referee and linesman. For the next dozen years after that, he was a fixture in the NHL.

All told, Ashley worked 605 games as a ref and another 17 on the line, 58 more playoff games and 350 minor pro assignments. In 1971, he worked game seven of the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, an unprecedented series of assignments under the greatest pressure imaginable for an official. After hanging up his whistle in 1972, Ashley remained active in the game, working as a talent scout for the NHL for young officials across the country after which he retired to Kitchener to work in sales of recreational vehicles.

John Ashley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981. He is survived by his brother, Doug Ashley.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or Grand River Hospital- COPD Clinic and can be arranged through the funeral home, 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com.
