Clint Smith 1913-2009
The Hockey Hall of Fame and its members are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Honoured Member Clint Smith.
A true gentleman on and off the ice, Smith was twice awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most gentlemanly player and was not assessed a single penalty in four of his eleven NHL seasons.
Smith was a key component of the New York Rangers' 1940 Stanley Cup victory and in 1943-44 set an NHL record by recording 49 assists in a season.
In 1953, he returned to Vancouver, where he had played as a young man and was one of the founding members of the B.C. Hockey Benevolent Association, holding various positions within the organization, including president.
Until his passing, Smith had been the oldest living member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, being inducted in 1991.
