The original Legends in Hockey was a documentary that traced the emotional journey from frozen ponds and backyard rinks, to the bright lights of the NHL. The series was recognized for both the Best Mini Feature series and Best Sports series, by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. It also received an honorable mention at the Banff Television Festival.

The series offered a unique look at the life and times of many of the greats of the game. Stu Hackel of the Hockey News writes:

"[Network] pictures has woven an attractive tapestry, through interviews with legendary stars, remarkable photography and film clips, excellent sound effects, a sympathetic musical score and majestic narration … Legends of Hockey affirms one's love for the game."

The first of five Legends of Hockey – The Second Season episodes begins by showcasing the golden era of the six-team league, and builds progressively forward through the modern era of hockey, culminating with two of the greatest ever, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

The producers interviewed 31 Hockey Hall of Fame Honoured members, as well as 13 broadcasters, and eight journalists for a total of 125 hours of footage. Producer Derik Murray and his production staff have said that the hardest part was paring the 125 hours of interviews into five hours of television.

Legends of Hockey – The Second Season will fulfill the promise of the original series: to record for all time the personal stories of the greatest players from the world of hockey, and to provide a lasting testament to the Legends of the Game.
