Collections Management System

The Hockey Hall of Fame has launched a major program to classify, record and database its vast collection of artifacts, documents, and photos. Known as the Collections Management System (CMS), this state-of-the-art computerized system uses IBM client/server technology. A centralized database on the Hall’s AS/400 Advanced Series server will eventually hold information about the Hall’s entire collection, with hundreds of keys for classifying objects and accessing cataloged information. The future goal is to be able to access the entire Hockey Hall of Fame catalog via the Internet.

Intelligent Database Queries
PC Workstations allow researchers to do complex SQL queries on the database, aided by an expert system with a hockey knowledge base.

Visual Interface
The workstation interface is visual, allowing scrolling of thumbnails of selected images in addition to database queries.

Digital Printing
CMS is being integrated with the KODAK DIGITAL SCIENCE™ Solutions printing system at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Prints, from sheets of thumbnails to high-quality posters, can be printed from photos in the database. Photo CD format images can also be digitally transferred to a CD.

If you’re a museum or institution wanting to know more about the CMS technology, send a query to acquisitions@hhof.com or contact the Resource Centre at (416) 360-7735 Fax (416) 360-1316.
