Bobby Orr Signs With Boston
August 1966
At 18,
Bobby Orr
didn't just bring phenomenal potential to the NHL. He also brought an agent -- Alan Eagleson. The Bruins had missed the playoffs in the previous seven years, and Eagleson demanded an unprecedented salary for his young hero, who had yet to play an NHL game. Bruins GM Hap Emms, while livid, caved in, thus allowing Orr to join the league for 1966-67 and ensured that other superstar veterans could command higher salaries in the years to follow.
Quotable:
"Orr is worth $2 million to us because we can build around him for 15 to 20 years."
- Boston GM Hap Emms in 1967
