The WHA ends its seven-year existence and four of its teams join the NHL, increasing the senior loop to 21 clubs. This merger brings to the NHL such teenage phenoms as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Michel Goulet and Mike Gartner, as well as the return of veterans Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Dave Keon.

On November 28, 1979, Billy Smith became the first goalie in NHL history to get credit for scoring a goal. He was the last player on the Islander team to touch the puck before Rob Ramage of Colorado put the puck into his own net.
