An annual award "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game."

Winner is selected in a poll by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular schedule. The winner receives $10,000 and the runners-up $6,000 and $4,000.


History
Presented to the National Hockey League in 1977 by the Board of Governors of the NHL in honour of Frank J. Selke, one of the great architects of NHL championship teams.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS

John Madden

During just his second full season in the NHL, centre John Madden captured the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward becoming the first New Jersey Devil to win the award. Consistently playing against the league's top scorers and killing penalties, Madden record a team-high three shorthanded goals and a +24 rating fourth best among Devils' forwards.
