The winner is selected in a poll by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in the 30 NHL cities at the end of the regular schedule.


History
The Hart Memorial Trophy was presented by the National Hockey League in 1960 after the original Hart Trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The original Hart Trophy was donated to the NHL in 1923 by Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, former manager-coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
  The original Hart Trophy was donated to the NHL in 1923 Ottawa forward Frank Nighbor named first-ever MVP (original Hart Trophy, 1923-24 season)

Joe Sakic

Joe Sakic captured his first Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP after becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to lead his club to the the Stanley Cup championship and capture the Hart Trophy in the same season. Sakic not only led the Avalanche, but finished second among NHL players with 54 goals and 118 points, along with leading the league in power play points (46), game-winning goals (12) and tying for the lead in plus-minus (+45).
