An annual award "to the defensive player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position."

The winner is selected in a poll by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular schedule. The winner receives $10,000 and the runners-up $6,000 and $4,000.

  During the 60's Pierre Pilote won the Norris three consecutive years with the Chicago Blackhawks Three-time winner Pierre Pilote of Chicago with NHL President Clarence Campbell (mid 60s)

History
The James Norris Memorial Trophy was presented in 1953 by the four children of the late James Norris in memory of the former owner-president of Detroit Red Wings.

Nicklas Lidstrom

After finishing as the runner-up for the past three seasons, Nicklas Lidstrom captured his first Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman. Lidstrom became the first Red Wing to win the award since Paul Coffey in 1995. The first European-born and trained Norris Trophy winner, he finished second among defencemen in scoring with 56 assists and 71 points, while finishing second in the league averaging 28:26 minutes of ice time/game.
