History
The trophy was presented to the National Hockey League in 1985-86 by the NHL Board of Governors to recognize the team compiling the top regular-season record.


COLORADO AVALANCHE

Colorado Avalanche

For the second time in franchise history the Colorado Avalanche captured the Presidents' Trophy by finishing first overall in the NHL with a seven-point lead over New Jersey and Detroit. The Avalanche finished with a 52-16-10-4 record led by both an outstanding defence and a high-powered offence, ranked third in the league with 270 goals for and 192 goals against. Their special team efficiency also led the way, having the best road power play (24.4%) and third best power play overall (22.0%).
