The first mask worn in the NHL was by Montreal Maroons' goaltender Clint Benedict on January 7, 1930. Benedict donned the leather mask after damaging his nose and cheekbone from a Howie Morenz slapshot. He wore the mask for five games and stated at the time that "the nosepiece protruded too far and obscured my vision on low shots."
