Zach Sill was born on May 24, 1988 in Truro, Nova Scotia. The undrafted centre is a product of the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL

Sill played two years with the Wildcats where he was named the QMJHLs Hardest Hitter, Hardest Worker, and Best Defensive Player in 2009. This led to the Pittsburgh Penguins to sign Sill to an NHL entry level contract.

Pittsburgh would assign Sill to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL for his first three years of professional hockey. Sill would begin the 2013-14 season in the AHL, however he would be promoted to play in his NHL debut on November 16, 2013 in a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The following season Sill would play 42 games with the Penguins before they would trade him along with a second and fourth round draft pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Daniel Winnik. Sill would finish the season with the Maple Leafs playing in 21 games and scoring one point.

At the conclusion of the season, Sill would sign a one year contract with the Washington Capitals for the 2015-16 season.
