Liam O'Brien was born on July 29, 1994 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A product of the Quebec Major Junior League, he began his major junior career with the Rimouski Oceanic and would later join the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. In his final year with the Huskies O'Brien would notch 20 goals in just 68 games to go along with 148 minutes in penalties.

Undrafted into the NHL, O'Brien received a training camp invite from the Washington Capitals in 2014 and surprised many by cracking the opening night lineup. He made his NHL debut on October 9, 2014 in a game that saw the Capitals take on the Montreal Canadiens. O'Brien would go on to split time during the 2014-15 season between the Capitals and their AHL affiliate in Hershey. In 13 games for the Caps, he would record a goal and an assist along with 23 minutes in penalties. O'Brien spent the majority of the 2017-18 season with Hershey, recording 17 goals in 69 games.
