Adam Wilcox was born on November 26, 1992 in South St. Paul, Minnesota. A product of the USHL, he was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning and would go on to attend the University of Minnesota.

Wilcox would forgo his senior collegiate season, signing an entry-level deal with the Lightning and joining the club’s AHL affiliate for a pair of games in the late stages of the 2014-15 campaign. As a free agent in the summer of 2017, Wilcox signed the Buffalo Sabres. He would spend the majority of the 2017-18 season in the AHL, but would also get his first taste of NHL action. He made his Sabres debut in the club’s final game of the season, coming on in relief in a 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers.
