Steven Fogarty was born on April 19, 1993 in Edina, Minnesota. Drafted by the New York Rangers in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, he spent a season with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL before attending the University of Notre Dame for four years. While at Notre Dame, Fogarty served as the teamís captain in his junior and senior seasons.

Following completing of his final collegiate season, Fogarty signed a two-year deal with the Rangers and joined the clubís AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack for the final three games of the 2015-16 season. Fogarty would spend two full seasons in Hartford before receiving his first NHL recall. He made his NHL debut in the Rangers final game of the 2017-18 season, before being returned to Hartford to complete the year.
