Curtis Valk was born on February 8, 1993 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He played junior hockey for his hometown Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League. In his final two years of junior, Valk recorded seasons of 91 and 92 points respectively.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Valk signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks and would begin his professional career in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings. Valk would split time between Kalamazoo and the Canucks AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, before becoming a free agent once again. On July 1, 2017 he inked a deal with the Florida Panthers and would spend the majority of the 2017-18 season with their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. Suiting up in 73 games for the club, Valk scored 20 goals and added 42 assists. Valk also got his first taste of NHL action during the 2017-18 season. He made his NHL debut on November 14, 2017 before being returned to Springfield the following day.
