Nicholas Merkley was born on May 23, 1997 in Calgary, Alberta. A standout for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League where he won the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2013-14, Merkley was selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Arizona Coyotes.

The 2017-18 season would be Merkley’s first as a professional. He spent the season predominantly at the American Hockey League level with the Coyotes’ affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. In 38 games for the club Merkley scorer 18 times and added 21 assists for 39 points. He got his first taste of NHL action on December 19, 2017 in a 3-2 loss against the Florida and was returned to Tucson after just one game.
