Sami Niku was born on October 10, 1996 in Haapavesi, Finland. A standout defenceman for JYP-Akatemia in his homeland, Niku was selected in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets.

Niku made his North American debut with the Jetsí AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, during the 2017-18 season. In 76 games for the club he scored 16 times and added 38 assists. At seasonís end he was named the AHLís top defender and earned First All-Star Team and All-Rookie honours. He also got his first taste of NHL action as the season came to an end, suiting up in a single game for the Jets, scoring a goal in a victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

On the international stage, Niku helped Finland to the gold medal at the 2016 World Junior Championship, the fourth tournament victory in the countryís history.
