Alex Formenton was born on September 13, 1999 in King City, Ontario. A product of the Aurora Tigers of the OJHL and the London Knights of the OHL, he was selected in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

Following a strong first professional training camp, Formenton surprised many by cracking the Senators opening night lineup. He made his NHL debut on October 7, 2017, becoming the youngest player to play a game for the contemporary Ottawa Senators. He was returned to London after just one game, and would suit up continue to progress with the Knights, recording 48 points in 48 games. Upon completion of the OHL season, Formenton joined the Senators AHL affiliate in Belleville.
