Chicago Blackhawks

Defenceman Bryan Berard becomes the first member of the Chicago Blackhawks to capture the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy since Pit Martin in 1970. Berard has earned the admiration and respect of his peers throughout the league with his extraordinary comeback after a devastating eye injury suffered on March 11, 2000. He missed the remainder of that season as well as the entire 2000-01 season while undergoing a battery of operations in an attempt to restore partial vision. Effectively retired from the game at the age of 23, Berard signed with the New York Rangers in 2001 and played in all 82 games. The next season he joined the Boston Bruins, followed by the Blackhawks in 2003-04. Appearing in 58 games for Chicago, Berard recorded 47 points, his best statistical season since his rookie campaign and appeared in his 500th career game on March 17. The Masterton Trophy runner-ups were Tampa Bay' Dave Andreychuk and Montreal's Seldon Souray.
